Outdoor Learning
Alternative Provision

A nature-based, Forest School-informed provision supporting early intervention, reducing the risk of exclusion, and improving outcomes for vulnerable pupils.

Restoring Confidence Through Nature

Our provision currently supports Key Stage 2 pupils who struggle to access mainstream education.

We offer a planned, time-limited intervention that complements school-based education, focusing on reintegration and readiness to learn.

Sessions are led by Level 3 trained Forest School Leaders alongside experienced staff, balancing child-led exploration with structured support.

Our Approach

20190601_142118_edited.jpg

At The World Outside, we provide outdoor, nature-based alternative provision for children who are finding it difficult to thrive within traditional classroom settings. We believe that many pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs do not lack ability or potential; often, they need time, space and trusted relationships to rebuild confidence and engagement with learning.

Our provision supports children to:

  • build resilience, self-esteem and self-confidence

  • develop positive relationships with peers

  • learn to trust adults through calm, consistent and respectful support

  • experience a sense of belonging within a small, supportive group

  • regulate emotions through movement, outdoor activity and shared experiences

  • discover new interests and practical skills that build confidence beyond the classroom

If you would like to discuss whether this provision may be suitable for a pupil or group, please get in touch.

The Journey

A clear, structured pathway from referral to reintegration support.

Step 1

Needs Identified

School identifies pupil with SEMH needs or anxiety who requires alternative provision.

Step 2

Commissioning

School contacts The World Outside to discuss needs and  book a place (individual or group) via SEND budget.

Step 3

Assessment

Suitability checks and risk assessments ensure safe group dynamics before start.

Step 4

The Provision

Pupil attends weekly nature-based sessions (1:3 ratio) for a 10-week block.

Step 5

Outcomes

We view behavior as communication. We use a relational, trauma-informed approach focused on co-regulation and emotional safety. No punitive measures or planned restraint.
